Vancouver's hottest Jazz musicians pay tribute to the legendary Alice Coltrane Get Tickets For decades, the music of Alice Coltrane has been stoking the imaginations of Jazz lovers and music.
Arvind Ramdas is a dynamic jazz drummer based in Vancouver and originally from India. His quick rise through the scene after arriving at Capilano University has made him one of the city’s busiest young players. He has collaborated with many local jazz mainstays such as Brad Turner, John Gross, Steve Kaldestad, and Cory Weeds. Based in the tradition, Ramdas’ quintet offers a thrilling set of hard-hitting, swinging compositions and arrangements from the Great American Songbook. The quintet is celebrating the release of their debut CD on Cellar Music called HERE WE GO With Spencer Drody -trumpet, Tamas Balai - alto saxophone, Noah Franche-Nolan - piano, & David Caballero - bass
Trumpeter and composer Ben Frost is a quietly essential voice in Vancouver’s jazz community, known for his lyrical approach to the horn and deeply considered original writing. His music balances clarity and openness, drawing listeners into expansive, melodic worlds, a sound clearly captured on his 2022 album Pixies. Influenced by masters like Wayne Shorter and Kenny Wheeler, his Quartet featuring Miles Wong drums, David Caballero bass, Noah Franche-Nolan piano, and Ben Frost trumpet brings his compositions into sharp focus through a collaborative, improvisational lens.
Noah Franche-Nolan is a JUNO-nominated, Vancouver-based pianist, improviser, composer, and producer. Known for blending emotional sincerity with technical intricacy, he leads the Noah Franche-Nolan Trio, whose acclaimed releases on Cellar Live Music include Within the Stream (2023) and 2025’s Rose-Anna, an “elegant, intelligent, sometimes energetically wilful opus” wherein Franche-Nolan “paints a rich, idea-filled portrait of a personal universe that mixes propulsive contemporary jazz, cultural references to Acadia, and a beautiful exploration of belonging, spirituality and attachment” (PANM360).
Noah co-leads Raagaverse and is a sought-after, stylistically wide-ranging sideman who performs regularly with Francois Houle’s Quartet, Russell Wallace’s Saltchuck City Orchestra, John Korsrud’s Absolute Unit, and the Hard Rubber Orchestra. His Trio features James Meger bass and Nicholas Bracewell drums.
Arvind Ramdas Quintet’s will be opening for the legendary Christian McBride and his new Group Ursa Major
Hard Rubber Orchestra will premiere new work by Anna Webber, Matt Choboter and Noah Franche-Nolan.
We are thrilled to announce Canada's jazz powerhouse, the Hard Rubber Orchestra's concert of new work by three Canadian composers: New York-based Anna Webber, Copenhagen-based Matt Choboter and Vancouver resident Noah Franche-Nolan.
Anna Webber (Canada/US, b.1984) is one of the brightest stars in the global jazz and new music realm. In 2024, she received the Herb Alpert Award in the Arts, a Chamber Music America New Jazz Works commission, and was voted top of both the tenor saxophone and flute "Rising Star" categories in the Downbeat Critic's Poll.
Matt Choboter (Canada/Denmark, b.1990) is a visionary composer and pianist whose music has been described as “ephemeral and beautifully fragile”.
Rounding out this outstanding program is the brilliant young Juno-nominated Vancouver composer and pianist Noah Franche-Nolan (Canada, b.1997).

About Klatwa - Embark:
“I trace my finger over the album cover—curved lines and angles forming the word 'Klatwa – to embark,' the same marks my great-grandfather's pen once made when writing to villages across the mountains. The songs within pulse with movement: salmon fighting upstream, crows banking against dusky skies, ancestors descending from stars, and communities coming together. This Chinook shorthand also flowed between Stʼatʼimc hands in the 1800s, a code of connection that barely survived.
I still hear my mother's voice in the melody of "Gathering"—how she would hum it first, barely audible, in the residential school's shadowed corners. Girls would gather around bodies huddled close, as she taught them to shape their mouths around Stʼatʼimc syllables the teachers had forbidden. They memorized each word, each inflection, passing it between them like a secret flame that mustn't die. Years later, when I record this song, I feel her breath in mine—the same defiant air that kept our language burning when they tried to extinguish it. Vancouver rose from this coastal soil nourished by the intertwined roots of many peoples. Saltchuck City Orchestra honours this convergence—each note a declaration of defiance, each harmony an offering to those who found strength in unity, and each rhythm pulsing forward, inviting us all to dance.”
